Totem Pole Playhouse is one of the best known and highly-regarded summer theatres in the United States. Its legacy extends to the pinnacle of almost every facet of the entertainment industry.

Totem Pole’s founding Artistic Director Karl Genus helped organize and establish the Directors Guild of America, the union which represents directors working in film, television, commercials, and other media today.

William H. (Bill) Putch ran the Playhouse for 30 years and directed more than 300 productions, many starring his wife, Emmy Award-winning actress, Jean Stapleton from the classic TV series, All in the Family. It was during his tenure that the Playhouse came to national prominence.

Other former Totem Pole leadership includes Pamela Putch, who currently serves as the Senior Vice-President of Production for NBC/Universal; Carl Schurr and Wil Love, currently resident actors with the Everyman Theatre in Baltimore; and Ray Ficca, who serves as the president of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Washington, D.C.
