The Elephant Man
August 5-14, 2022
Drama
By Bernard Pomerance
About the Show:
Joseph Merrick was a man so physically deformed that he came to be known by the unfortunate nickname the “Elephant Man.” With very few options, Merrick was forced to earn money by displaying himself to the public in traveling sideshows.
He eventually found himself alone and destitute in London, but thanks to the kindness of his friend Dr. Frederick Treves, Merrick was admitted for care and observation into the London Hospital. Treves became determined to help Merrick lead a normal life, and Merrick soon became the toast of society.
In the end, Merrick learned that normality isn’t something he could achieve, nor something that he even necessarily wanted.
