About The Show:
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterpiece transitions masterfully to the stage as we see one of literature’s classic examples of character-under-pressure on display.
Hester Prynne has committed an inexcusable crime of adultery and has compounded it and confounded her prosecutors by refusing to name her partner in sin. The men of the town smile knowingly and the women gossip about the scarlet letter that Hester has been forced to wear on her breast as punishment.
The man whom she protects willingly trades his public humiliation for pangs of conscience as he witnesses the scorn Hester is forced to bear.
The dramatic climax of this adaptation reveals once again the timeless truth that compassion and understanding are forever more powerful than vengeance and cruelty.
Theatre Harrisburg is proud to be presenting the U.S. premier of this important work.
